Some Maps I made...

All eyes on KY, AR and PA

Yes, that's right, today is a test. In a couple of states today, most notably Pennsylvania, the nation will see the anti-incumbent feeling put to the test. Senator Arlen Specter and challenger Joe Sestak have locked in a polling dead heat for more than 4 weeks now and today it comes down to this. There are also primary elections in Arkansas and Kentucky. Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln is facing a tough primary battle and Kentucky Republicans are clashing over Senator Jim Bunning's seat, because he is retiring.

Umm...excuse me

Today, local news channel WJLA announced Bob Ryan was joining their team. Wait, wait, wait...last time I checked Bob Ryan was on board with NBC4. This essentially creates a monopoly for ABC7, they now have the two best meteorologists in the DC area. If NBC4 fired Ryan, they just shot themselves in the foot and will not retain any news leadership titles they previously had.

the story is here: http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0510/736818.html

Looking at November

As in 1994, anti-incumbent fever swept the country, of course, this anti-incumbent fever was targeted at Democrats. So now 16 years later, we seem to be heading down the exact same path as 1994. Using data from FiveThirtyEight and ElectionProjection.com, here is an idea of what is likley to happen as of May

House:
Republicans gain 23 seats ( 178 --> 201 )
Democrats lose 23 seats ( 257 --> 234 )

Senate:
Republicans gain 7 seats ( 41 --> 48 )
Democrats lose 7 seats ( 57 --> 50 )

Incumbents Defeated:
AR: Blanche Lincoln (D)
CO: Michael Bennet (D)
NV: Majority Leader Harry Reid (D)
OH: Rob Portman (R)
PA: Arlen Specter (D)

Governors:
Republicans gain 5 states ( 24 --> 29  )
Democrats lose 6 states ( 26 --> 20 )
Independents gain 1 state ( 0 --> 1 )

A call to arms...sort of

This November, we, the electorate have the power to change Congress. This is the message both parties are sending, especially the Republicans. The facts are, our votes count for little, its the candidate that gets the most corporate support that ultimately wins. Popular support means little if in a few strokes a PAC can change the mind of a whole sector of the electorate. There ought to be a ban on this! Corporations have no place in politics, their place is the economy and when the fuck up they need to be corrected. But this simple psychological fact never happens because the candidates that cozy up to the corps are elected and have a duty to defend their interests. Its disgusting, I know.

How we change this is uncertain, but the fact remains, if something does not change soon, the US will become so politically divided and the government so out of tune with the people, the country will not stand, it will collapse. Stark and bleak, I know but facts are facts, its happened elsewhere in similar circumstances, it can happen here. No government is safe from the anger of its people

You can't prosecute BP, but you can change the world

Breaking News:

IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO PROSECUTE BP FOR THE OIL SPILL IN THE GULF OF MEXICO!!!!

BP (Beyond Petroleum) is a quasi-nationalized British company, owned mostly by the British government. So unless those extreme environmentalists want to prosecute everyone in Whitehall, drop it. Although disgusted by the situation, I am even more shocked at two things, first, the lack of public outrage against BP for the disaster and Obama's refusal to back down on offshore drilling. Does he not realize that offshore drilling will just cause the final oil bust to come faster!?! The solution is to quickly invest in alternate power sources (Kudos to MA for the Cape Cod wind farm). Drill Baby Drill has so much wrong with it that I won't start going into it here, I'd literally write an essay on it.

The fact of the matter is that yes, petroleum is our primary energy source and will be for the foreseeable future, but the consequences of maintaining our unsustainable lifestyle are enormous. So, while attention is rightfully diverted on to the Gulf Coast situation, it needs to, later, be re-directed to alternative energy. The hour of reckoning is approaching and unless humanity changes its behaviors soon, we enter into the unknown consequences of our own inaction.
